We Love Buying Homes In Jacksonville, FL
So how did it all start?
Let’s rewind to 2015. I was taking a trip to Spain with my girlfriend to visit our friend Steve. Having graduated college only 6 months before, I wasn’t exactly rolling in the dough.
We had enough to cover flights and luckily a free place to stay—thanks Steve 🙂
Still. I was trying to think of ways to make extra money for our trip, when I started reading about this thing called Airbnb.
“Get paid to rent your room out while you are traveling”. Sounds good to me!
Can this really be true?
My roommate, Evan, agreed to meet the guests and get the place ready if anyone booked. I snapped a few photos with my phone and created the listing on Airbnb.
Frankly, I wasn’t expecting much. Staying in a 6 bedroom apartment of kids who just graduated college isn’t exactly a tourist’s dream accommodation. I figured “maybe a young traveler on a budget will book 2 to 3 nights and we’ll get an extra $200 for our trip.”
3 hours later I get an email from Airbnb. Every available night is booked and we made over $1,000. It covered my round trip flight and then some!
That’s when it hit me. I should really look into this real estate thing when I get back from Spain.
As soon as I got back, I started reading everything I could about real estate. A few months later I got my real estate license and started working as an agent.
The first year was tough.
For starters, agents have to talk to a lot of people they don’t know on the phone. I never liked talking on the phone…nevermind trying to convince someone I’ve never met to trust me with their biggest investment.
Admittedly, I was scared of saying the wrong thing or coming across as a “pushy salesman”.
So what did I do?
I figured the less I said, the fewer mistakes I could make. Plus, there’s no way I could come across as pushy if I barely said anything.
That’s right. I let my clients do all the talking.
And when I did speak, I would ask questions—about their lives, their families, their goals. Anything to avoid the topic of real estate, which I knew nothing about!
So why am I telling you this?
Well. Something weird happened.
By not trying to sell anything. In fact, by doing the exact opposite. I ended up selling more real estate than the 40 other agents who started with me.
And the best part?
I didn’t feel like a pushy salesman. Frankly, I didn’t feel like a salesman at all. I was simply listening to people and helping them reach their goals.
My point is this. Real estate isn’t about selling and it’s not about properties. Real estate is about understanding what people want and helping them get there.
This quote sums it up best.
“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” – Zig Ziglar
But you’re probably wondering how I went from being a real estate agent to becoming an investor.
In 2017, I bought my first house. Here are the before and after photos.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed fixing up that house. But I wasn’t ready to leave being an agent just yet.
So what happened?
As an agent, I was constantly talking with homeowners and I kept hearing one thing over and over.
They wished there was an alternative to listing their home on the market. Each person had their own reason, but one thing was obvious—selling a home on the market isn’t the best choice for everyone.
Unload My Home was started to give you another way to sell your home.
I believe that you should know all the options to sell your home, so you can choose the best option for you—even if that option isn’t us.
